A Message From The Board Chairperson

On behalf of Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services Board of Directors, I welcome you to our website. We will continue to complete further development and enhancements herein as our development progresses.

I am pleased to take this opportunity to introduce you to the role of the Board of Directors whom acts as the governing body of the corporation.  As a Board, we will ensure that all aspects of the agency are consistent with its Mandate, Vision, Mission, Philosophy and Guiding Principles.  Will also take into account requirements specified by our member First Nation laws that have been enacted to protect and preserve Anishinabe culture, languages, customs, traditions and practices of our First Nations.

The responsibilities of the Board of Directors include planning, policy development, monitoring of programs and operations including the approval of operating budgets, service contacts and major expenditures, communications, and delegation of responsibility for administrative and program operations  through our Executive Director Denise Morrow.

I am pleased to communicate that we have noteworthy achievements:  This year marks a dramatic stage as we celebrate 20 years of continual operations in providing prevention services.  As we reflect upon this milestone, we strongly held onto the agency’s original vision to work towards achieving the protection mandate which will allow us to be able to provide child welfare services to our own children and families based upon our values as Anishinabe people, “Our Children, Our Responsibility”.

Together, within the past year we have witnessed substantial change and major advancements by securing an Executive Director, amalgamation of the Child Welfare Initiative, improved relationships with our political leadership, guiding the process of transitioning prevention services to community-based services, approval of policy manuals, protocols, and completion of on-going ministry requirements to achieve Child Welfare Services.

We are reminded of the many partners who have supported our agency over the years and whom have helped us to further progress in our mandate. It is through our partnerships that we are able to continually succeed and maintain the current strong momentum in the areas of prevention and realizing our founding members’ vision of taking care of our own children.

Community partnerships including our member First Nation Leadership, Councils, Committees, Prevention Teams and Community Stakeholders.  Ministerial partnerships include The Ministry of Children and Youth Services who currently are supporting the process of achieving designation through Capacity Development funding and developmental guidance.

Key provincial First Nation organizational partnerships include The Association of Native Child and Family Services Agencies of Ontario and The Union of Ontario Indians.

Other Agency partnerships required within our current development include the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies and The Children’s Aid Society of the Districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin whom are collaborating and supporting the transitional planning of Child Welfare Services to Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services.

Most importantly, we thank our kinship, customary care and foster parents who continue to inspire us by your willingness to nurture and care for our children unconditionally.

To all our committed volunteers who aid in the delivery of service and our resourceful, dedicated and passionate staff, who without them, the success of the agency would not be possible.

By continuing to work together, we will all help create a world where our children are protected and safe within their own communities.  It is by your support that we are able to have a tangible impact upon the lives of our children, youth and families every single day.

As we prepare for our future, we look forward establishing new partnerships to enhance and expand upon our service delivery. Thank you for visiting our web-site!
